August 2000 was almost at the end of the presidency and he would have been labeled one way or another by the right wing repukes. The fact is that Bush & Cheney had secret meeting with Enron, and when the West coast asked them to intervene during 2001 on clear manipulation of energy prices, they followed the Enron line and did nothing about it.
