To convert that question into a political discussion, you might wish to take a look at Andrew Sullivan's take on the Santorum bit. To say he was troubled is to put it far too mildly. It reads as if he expected the Bush folk to denounce Santorum at the same level they used on Lott. They, of course, did not. Rather embraced him. So Sullivan, while not pulling back on his support for their foreign policies, is rethinking things.

Obviously, Sullivan does not have a constituency. But he could be a canary.
