Yes, it almost always does. Exceptions would be like the Jerry Springer show. One side or the other or both will detect the breaking point and determine how best to resolve the issue in a way that avoids the break. In the case of "unprovoked aggression" we are talking about a first strike by one side or the other that repositions things so that the striker gets what they want without the break. In the case of oppositional discussion you typically don't expect abortionists to become pro-lifers but you hope to keep them in the discussion to approach the finer and riskier points of arguement without a blow up. To do that you must move the arguement off of dead center and in the direction of the breaking point. The times to discuss common ground are where the breaking point seems imminent without it.
