Wrong! Enron set new records of greed around the world. Nobody can touch the U.S. as the greediest country in the world.
And as far as being generous... WRONG! In fact Americans are some of the least generous countries in the world per capita. We give less per capita by far than other countries. Try again. You are 0 for 2.

INDEPENDENT SECTOR Survey Measures the Everyday Generosity of Americans
89% Gave Last Year, 44% Volunteered

(ATLANTA, GEORGIA, November 4, 2001)—INDEPENDENT SECTOR released its comprehensive study of giving and volunteering in the United States today at its Annual Conference in Atlanta. According to Giving and Volunteering in the United States 2001, nearly nine in ten (89%) American families gave charitable contributions last year with an average contribution of $1,620 or 3.2 percent of their income.

Nearly half (44%) of adults volunteered their time last year, making up a volunteer workforce of 83.9 million people. This figure represents the equivalent of over 9 million full-time employees at a value of $239 billion.

“While attention in recent weeks has focused on the charitable response since the terrorist attacks of September 11, this study demonstrates that Americans are generous year-round even in more ordinary times,” said Sara E. Meléndez, president and CEO of INDEPENDENT SECTOR.

At this moment, U.S. soldiers are serving in the twisted jungles and mud plains of Central America, lending a hand of help and hope to the people still recovering from Hurricane Mitch. Their noble service calls to mind the words of Walt Whitman who once wrote, "When sure of their object, there is no end to American generosity and benevolence."

Like our forces in Central America, those of you who lent your hands and hearts to this year’s Combined Federal Campaign have proven the enduring wisdom of Whitman’s words. For year after year, there is no end to your generosity and benevolence.

Orphan Grain Train helps feed world's poor

The Nebraska relief ministry called the Orphan Grain Train has shipped 9,000 tons of mostly clothes and medical supplies to the needy overseas in the past decade.
Although it is a small amount measured against the poverty and natural disasters rampant in the world, the relief ministry is a vital part of the American tradition of sending humanitarian and development aid abroad — a tradition that still has the support of voters and which has received a new policy emphasis since the war against terrorism.

The American Tradition of Philanthropy
Philanthropy is an American phenomenon which began in the early days of European Settlement. When William Penn and his passengers disembarked on the wilderness shore that was to become Philadelphia, many were sick from the long trans-Atlantic voyage. The Pennsylvanians promptly took up a "subscription" and sent back to Europe for a "physik" to come be their doctor. More than a century later Ben Franklin also gathered funds from his fellow Philadelphians to found the Pennsylvania Hospital, America's first, in 1751.

To this day, the great majority of charitable giving worldwide takes place in North America, and the non-profit sector is a huge piece of the American economy and way of life. Virtually all Americans support charitable causes, from young children saving pennies for Unicef to senior citizens bequeathing substantial sums for their alma maters. Health care has received extraordinary support from donors over the years, and it is safe to say that without philanthropy neither medical institutions nor their staffs nor the services they perform would be nearly as advanced and effective as they are.
