You have to realize, John, the Santorum's position is the standard position of the Catholic Church. Twenty one percent of this country is Catholic. It is the standard position of the Evangelicals. Look at these stats on them.

The position of the Catholic church is definitely not isomorphic with the laity. The American Catholic Church has always been quite different from the rest of Catholicism in this regard.

I don't recall ever seeing polls on Catholics views of various questions about homosexuality, though I have little doubt they are out there somewhere.

My own guess, fwiw, is that the spin will turn this into a nuanced bit. But it also depends on whether the Dems wish to take advantage of it. It's certainly there for the asking.
