Most likely the wording in the 10-K is a version of the 10-K dialect of legalese. My guess is that they know the compound came out of their collaboration with Merck, but they use the obtuse wording to guard against potential liability in the event TLRK's claim is disputed. By saying "we believe this compound resulted from our collaboration...", they reduce vulnerability to a lawsuit based on TLRK claiming "this compound resulted from our collaboration..."
