I think this column is right on the mark on the Politics, John. Frankly, unless the Pals do some major things, I see no reason to pressure the Israelis.

As I said in an earlier post, Bill, if you wish to have serious discussion of the ME here, it will become only that. I'll respond but you will disagree as will several others; new others will appear from other threads and we'll be off and running. Unless you close it down.

The big flaw in your summary statement is that Abbas can do little so long as the Israelis occupy the West Bank and Gaza. In the language of the policy makers at the moment, if actions on the road map turn out to be sequential we are going nowhere. They have to be simultaneous to hold any chance at all.

If not, I think it's fair to assume the Bush folk are reading of the Sharon script and this area is in for only more blood letting.
