Much of the world's foreign policy is set by realists (in the political sense of the word, not its everyday usage). Seen this way, the difference between UK and Eastern Europe with the rest is that they are maximalist realists while France and Russia are minimalist realists. In other words, the French believe their interests are best met by uniting with other small powers against the top dog, while the British believe sucking up to the boss is the best path to progress.

History strongly sides with the French view. Machiavelli is the father of modern political science. In Prince he takes pains to point out unless you don't think you will survive it, you should never support the strong against the weak. The reasons for such move are well articulated in the article Zonder posted.

So do tell us if you will, about Jim Lehrer's report. I missed that one.
