This issue just reeks of irony. Of course, the Bush folk are right with their argument. The problem is they have no standing to make the argument because the political culture and interests out of which they come are justly perceived as caring about these issues only when they conform to ideological preferences. Condemn them in Cuba (or China) but not in Pinochet's Chile or El Salvador or the Shah's Iran.
