Lyle, the results of the physics experiment were published under the title "Quantum oscillations between two weakly coupled reservoirs of superfluid helium-3" by Richard Packard, Seamus Davis, Sergey Pereversev, Scott Backhaus and Alex Loshak. All of these people are at U.C. Berkeley, if that is helpful.
I am interested in listening to discussions of quantum mechanics but struggle to understand very basic concepts. I realize that in my initial comments on this thread I confused molecules and atoms, which is just about my speed here. (I do know the difference between an atom and a molecule, however.) Could you say a little more about quantum behavior and intuition??
You won't get any argument from me on Teddy Kennedy--I just tried to put myself in his situation, imagining how it would be to be the baby in his family, see all his brothers and one sister die, not be as smart as most of them, and deal with all the events in his life. I don't know if I could have done any better, and am trying to be sympathetic and tolerant here. I am sure he was drunk when he drove off the bridge at Chapaquidick, and also very married--not that this ever seemed to matter much to the Kennedys.
I am fascinated by the hold this family continues to have over the American public, however. I saw an A&E documentary not long ago based on recently declassified documents, which indicates that the CIA enlisted the help of the Mafia to assassinate Castro in the summer/fall of 1963, at Kennedy's urging. (Don't forget JFK and Sam Giancana shared a mistress.) Several attempts were made, but failed. Castro publicly warned Kennedy that he would retaliate, but it wasn't taken seriously at the time. Castro also enlisted the Mafia, out of New Orleans, and some other players, and was successful in having Kennedy killed. Oliver Stone's much criticized movie "JFK" was actually pretty accurate, it seems. I read the same information in the paper a week or so later, about the declassified documents, and Gerald Ford insisting the Warren Report be changed regarding the wound in the back of Kennedy's neck so that it appeared that one gunman did the shooting (there were actually two) but it was not really discussed in the news. I think there is a lot about this episode in American history, and the Kennedys, that is weird and disturbing.
Okay, sorry, back to quantum mechanics. Just why would an atom make a sound as it tries to be two places at once, or is this a valid question? |
