Sen Robert Byrd said much worse. And is still there.

Can you find a link that offers the context in which Byrd said whatever he said? I recall posters using it each time someone pointed out the wink and nod Rep strategy. I checked it out once and the context made it look innocuous. But, if you can find something that makes it look bad, that is that he preferred a segregated society, then go to it.

It's obvious that Santorum considers homosexuality to be the equivalent of incest and other such things. And that he would prefer continued policing of homosexuality sex.

And, just to see who the Reps are in bed with, you might wish to take a look at the latest court nominee, J. Leon Holmes, from the White House. Here's the link to the NYTimes article.

G.O.P. Fails in Bid to End Filibuster Against Texas Judge
By NEIL A. LEWIS

Most of the article is on the Owens' nomination but they get to Holmes nomination about half way through the piece. The quote which, obviously, has everyone running for cover is the following, offered in 1997.

In 1997 Mr. Holmes wrote that "the woman is to place herself under the authority of the man." He had also written that abortion should not be available to rape victims because conceptions from rape occur with the same frequency as snow in Miami.

You will quickly note that his nomination is supported by the two Dem senators from Arkansas. My guess is that once Feinstein's staffers, a Dem Senator, located the quote, the Arkansas senators, who, no doubt, did not know about it, withdrew their support. They were, likely, simply supporting the usual mutual backscratching stuff that produces these nominees.

Will the Bush White House back off Holmes now that the quotes are out there? Good question.
