to induce cell death in 100 percent of ovarian cancer cells, including those cells resistant to conventional agents such as paclitaxel and carboplatin.

From the paper itself: "Phenoxodiol treatment, but not [three other genestein derivatives], induced cell death of all the tested ovarian cancer cells (n=22) in a dose-dependent manner."

However, I suspect that this is a bit misleading - their graph stops at a dose of 10 microgram/ml, at which point cell viability is still between 25% and 60% (depending on the particular line) of that of untreated cells. Thus it does indeed induce cell death, but apparently doesn't kill all the cells, which is what one would conclude from the quote taken out of context - the 100% apparently refers to all the cell lines, not all the cells in each line.

Most interestingly though, it did not alter survival of normal ovarian surface epithelial cells at all.

The effect appears lasting - one 4 hour exposure produced a 60% decrease in colony size after 10 days further incubation.

I suspect that if this works it would be most useful as part of combo therapy. There are hints that it is synergistic with IFN-gamma and some platinum based compounds.

Worth keeping an eye on, but probably no rush to buy.
