Ray,

Interesting article. Sort of a deja vu from the late 60s and 70s. Unfortunately, it looks like a lot of the same tired old mistakes are being repeated.

Civil disorder is counter productive. Someone who might otherwise have been sympathetic to a particular message, is not likely to befriend some fruitcake who tied up traffic and made them three hours late to a friend's wedding. Over a period of time, the "movement" turns into a fringe group of the least productive members of society who never had what it takes to change anything in the first place.

If all the hippies of the 70s had gone out and registered to vote, then groomed their own people for political office, a lot of things would likely be different today. The problem was the "movement" deteriorated to a degree that none of its members had the level of personal and social responsibility required to implement change.

I don't remember who said it, but I agree with the statement; "Let he who desires peace be prepared for war.". Or perhaps Machiavelli's version makes more sense; "It's unreasonable to expect he who is armed to obey he who is unarmed.". The Swiss have been in a state of peace for ages. When a boy becomes man high, he learns the arts of war and takes his personal weapons home with him --- never to fight for the simple reason he is too dangerous to attack. While I consider peace to be a desirable condition, my personal view of the subject makes it hard for me to relate to the sheep like approach typically embraced by the usual peace movement.

I've found some good stuff through Indymedia, here and there, but as a general rule the static level is too high unless a person has an unholy amount of time to waste separating the wheat from the chaff. While I have a high regard for those making some kind of effort to make a difference, my current view is some kind of distillation process needs to take place to produce meaningful results.
