An anecdote, and I have no idea whether it actually has any meaning, but it seems to me that it might. I've known many people from Iran here in the US, and they've always said they were Persian, or from Persia. Never Iran.

Last week, we went to a kabob place we'd heard about (Duke Kabob, on Little River Turnpike in Alexandria, very good). I asked the owner whether he was from Afghanistan or Persia or what, and he said "Persia-Iran. Iran."
