NTT DoCoMo Inc said on Wednesday its camera-phone users had exceeded 10 million, grabbing the top spot in the growing photo-phone market away from J-Phone Co Ltd, a unit of Vodafone Group Plc.

DoCoMo, Japan's dominant mobile phone operator, took just 11 months to surpass the 10 million mark since launching its first camera-phone last June.

A spokesman for J-Phone, which had 9.015 million camera-phone users at the end of March, said that it was still below 10 million as of Wednesday.

Launched in November 2000 by J-Phone, Japan's third-largest mobile phone operator, camera-mounted handsets have become the nation's hottest telecoms trend since the rise of the mobile Internet.

DoCoMo, a late comer to camera phones, has reeled in users at a much faster pace than J-Phone in recent months, helped by a series of new camera-equipped handsets as well as upgrade demand among its total users of 44 million.
