< Fortunately, most democratic nations have little to fear from the US>
Hawk, unless they vote for the wrong people of course.
When something is very big and very tough and very greedy, it makes little guys nervous.
I think "ruling" was not too strong a word. Ruling comes from purchasing power. There's a misunderstanding that the British Empire was founded on brutal force. That's not the case. It was much the same as the American Empire, founded on money and trade, but well-armed too [so they could deal with the 19th century equivalents of Saddam].
What happens with the United Nations will be a good guide to what the USA will do regarding the American Empire. If the UN is pushed aside, not reconstituted and ignored, then I think we'll be seeing the age-old story of greedy empire revisited. There's a chance for something much more impressive. But that would take imagination. Which isn't in the White House [that's my bet, but I'm always pleased to be surprised].
The USA is like an enormous financial black hole, sucking vast amounts of stuff inside the event horizon. I've chosen to be part of the deal because it makes sense, I supported getting rid of Saddam and the USA is the nearest thing to a kind of World Government, which operates on ethical and other principles which I go along with.
But, there's no electoral input from me other than voting my shares, which is voting with my feet.
The USA citizens vote what to do with the money I'm taxed [via QUALCOMM]. They can vote, but I can't. They can stick me in Guantanamo Bay or otherwise treat me as an alien with very, very limited rights.
The American Declaration of Independence dealt with the sort of issues which are arising now and which will grow. That's assuming the USA does what I hope it will do, which is continue to succeed, especially in the QUALCOMM realm.
"No taxation without representation". How does that sound? I might use it as my rallying slogan for freedom for We the Sheeple who are UnAmerican. "Human rights for UnAmericans". There's another good one.
I'm not too worried at all for now. It's trends I keep an eye on. For all I know, the USA will fizzle and Cyberspace will be the real world power to worry about. I'm betting on that one. Backing it!
