Amazing that the stock market is open today, on Cinco de Mayo.

America owes a debt to Mexico for 5/5, but very few realize its importance. A rag-tag Mexican army smashed the mighty French--including the Foreign Legion--at Puebla at a time when the US was embroiled in the Civil War. The French were on Mexican soil to collect alleged debts owed by the government of Benito Juarez, who had ousted Napoleon III's handpicked Mexican Emperor Maximillian. Nappy was pissed, hated the US, and saw an opportunity to harass it. The Mexicans foiled Nap, even though a few years before the US had humiliated Mexico in the Mexican-American War.

We don't even declare a national holiday for this bit of help from a country the US has mistreated for centuries. If Napoleon had not been defeated by this rag tag bunch of Mexican heroes, the consequences for America would have been grave.
