The story you link to says that "its simply not true" but then it reports veterans receiving negative reactions. It focuses on the negative reactions to vets who protested the war but that was not the only type of negative reaction.

The author could reasonably claim that, those who say most veterans where spit on or other wise abused are making an incorrect statement but that is pretty much knocking down a straw man.

While few anti-war protesters spat on soldiers going to or coming from Vietnam, the story provides no reason to believe this never happened and if it did happen it was not a myth. Its inaccurate to say that "it is simply not true." A better response would be something like "that almost never happened".
