The grandfather of my wife was a refugee from Calles, when they were shooting priests, during the time of the cristeros ... his whole family was falsely accused of being cristeros, they had to run for it, and change their name for many years, until Cárdenas .... never at any time were they political, nor particularly religious, just trying to survive and raise the children .... there is a whole string of ironies come in to the story, at one point involving the name of IZ .... ignorance was the main enemy, Vasconcelos was right imho, education is the answer to everything .... speaking of which, one nick i've thought of using, but never have, is raza_cósmica, in honour of JV
In el DF i knew a man who claimed to have known Rivera, Kahlo, and Trotsky .... said he ran errands for both Rivera and Trotsky, and it's true he was raised very nearby, however his age doesn't appear to quite compute with his story, either that or he was older than he looked, or he was remarkably competent and politically aware when he had twelve years -g- .... great stories though, well told
'Hated Americans.' ... um, lemme guess, you probably mean 'US nationals', 'estadounidenses' .... 'norteamericanos' even ..... the latter being clearly imprecise, of course ..... once only ten years ago, or so, i was being introduced to a meeting of an ejido in the southeast, as a resident 'norteamericano', a son of the family with whom i was staying jumped up and said in my defense, no no he is not in any way norteamericano, he lives in Canadá, it is far to the north of Estados Unidos, close to Rusia ..... i'd love to have video of this now, to show the fervour -g- .... but through the recent years mejicanos are discovering that they too are norteamericanos, it's a bit of a shock to some, but a good thing, got to make the best of it in any case ..... ¡Viva la Raza!
