If, as you guess, most countries are toppled from within then you would expect to find the people remaining in those places are of the same ancestory as they were in the past. This is true in some areas like Central Africa, but vastly untrue in many others. The mongols push out the central asians who in turn push out the greeks who push out the visgoths who push out the goths and so forth. The process is even more pronounced in the western hemisphere and China.
