hi Kerry, The scenario I envision would be somewhat similar to what the USA experienced during the Great Depression that is kind of what i am envisioning as well. hopefully and probably not as severe. we know from history that the miners were the best equity subsector in throughout the 1930s, with some ending up with dividend payouts that exceeded their stock prices alone in the late 20s. thus i think there is a good chance for gold equities to do well in our current environment. i doubt bullion will function as currency in the US, but i guess anything is possible. i know people in Argentina wish they'd held bullion! just my opinion. Other people's opinions are just as valid because none of us really knows for sure what events might come to pass in a global fiat currency malfunction. agreed. although again looking at history, one thing we know for sure is that all fiat currencies of times past have ended up being worthless. how it plays out this time, when virtually all currencies are fiat and the US dollar is the biggest fiat of them all, and with the US carrying enormous trade, fiscal, and net investment deficits (and now net investment income deficit for the first time since forever), such that a fall in the dollar's value has serious implications for all our surplus-bearing trade partners, will be a new chapter in the history of finance with a story that remains untold.
