Dell Computer Plans Slimmer Corporate Name

A WALL STREET JOURNAL ONLINE NEWS ROUNDUP

About 20 years after Michael Dell started assembling computers in a Texas dorm room, Dell Computer Corp. said it plans to drop the "Computer" from its corporate name, reflecting its shift into a broader array of products and services.

The company said in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that the board is proposing to change the company's name to simply Dell Inc., subject to the approval of shareholders.

"While Dell began as a supplier of personal computers, our capabilities now reach deeply into the enterprise and we are a leading seller of servers, storage systems and other technology products and services," the filing said. "Therefore, the board of directors believes that 'Dell Computer Corp.' is no longer reflective of Dell's business as it exists today."

The move comes several years after fellow tech giant Microsoft Corp. altered its well-known motto to emphasize Internet services and mobile gadgets.

Back in 1999, Microsoft formally abandoned the PC-centric motto espoused by Chairman Bill Gates in 1975: "A computer on every desk and in every home." The company's vision statement was changed to: "Empower people through great software anytime, anyplace and on any device."
