He blew it on video poker and slot machines

That's an awful lot of money to be throwing into the slot machines. I had assumed he was shooting dice or playing cards. Maybe there is a pathology there...

He struck me as an intellectual bully when he led the charge to have Reagan's people drop the nomination of ME Bradford to lead the Council of Arts and Humanities in 1980. (I don't think it's called that, but I can't think of the exact name of the government organization that is involved with Arts and Humanities)

Bradford was a distinguished man of letters, a real scholar. He would have been a tremendous appointment. Unfortunately for him, he had written several articles over his career that were critical of Lincoln. The people (Bennett and his buddies) that lobbied to shoot down the nomination acted like thugs and goons. They smeared Bradford without giving him a chance to respond. Too bad, that would have been an interesting debate. The Reagan people withdrew the nomination and guess who got the job? Bennett did. I think he was a Democrat up to that point, too.
