Jon,

Many thanks for the observations on shorting SPY--and I did have it wrong about puts instead of shorting. However, it appears from your comments that, unlike individual shares, SPY shares will always be available for shorting? I have gotten enough "no shares available" in my recent forays into shorting individual stocks to wonder how shorting SPY is different.
