Marcos,

I agree that the US support of an independent Texas was almost certainly tied to expansionism on the part of Southern interests (which involved slave owners - who wanted another slave state in the Union). What I find unusual is your attack on Jefferson - who was President before Mexico was a free country.

To critique Jefferson for slavery, when in his era it was still legal in both the Spanish and British colonies, is clearly the pot calling the kettle black.

As for reading - you should try some. When Jefferson made the comment you quote - Canada was not an independent country, but was a colony of Britain. You might also notice that Britain and the US were at war at that moment. Given the difference in size at the time - any imperialism was on the part of the British.

As an interesting aside - I am often amused at the difference between gap between myths taught the nationals of any country as a child, and historical reality. Its really pretty common.

Going to school in Canada and studying the War of 1812 is quite different than watching what my children read. Its often the same facts reported quite differently. In this case Canadian books report that Britain won and American books report the opposite.

Militarily it was something of a draw, but had a profound impact on shaping attitudes on both sides of the border.

John
