This is a classic example of why you shouldn't believe everything you read. This afternoon, CNN showed a videotape of this incident. Much to my surprise, this shooting took place at night!
The camera team was behind the reporter(s) as they advanced upon the scene of the bulldozer doing its thing. You could just barely make out the white flag they were carrying when they were only five feet away!
Finally, the camera team stayed back when the newsman(men) moved ahead. As soon as they got 10-15 feet away, you couldn't see anything of them. It was also very hard to hear them shouting over the din of the bulldozer. I heard them several times, but very faintly. I'm sure them men on the dozer heard nothing. Watch CNN this evening, I'm sure they will rerun it.
Another item......they reported that the reporter was shot in the back, which would indicate that he was shot by Palestinians. However, he could have just as well have been turning back to return to the camera crew, so that doesn't prove anything. Who actually shot him won't be known till they determine what kind of rifle the bullet came from, but whoever shot him was obviously shooting blind, as is the case most of the time in firefights.
One thing for sure, he showed extremely poor judgment in being were he was. Not that that in any way justifies his killing, but war zones are risky enough without deliberately walking into a firefight at night.
