IDT Introduces Industry's First 9-Mbit Asynchronous Dual-Port Family

Monday May 5, 7:46 am ET

Leading Communications IC Company Extends Portfolio of Asynchronous Devices to Include Industry's Fastest and Densest Dual-Port Products

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 5, 2003-- IDT (TM)(Integrated Device Technology, Inc.; Nasdaq: IDTI), a leading communications IC company, today extended its leadership position in multi-port technology with the introduction of the industry's first 9-Mbit asynchronous true dual-port products. Unlike alternative devices, these products operate at access times as low as 10ns, making them the fastest asynchronous dual-port devices in the industry. The 9-Mbit devices also offer a unique set of features, including a 2.5-volt core for low power consumption, selectable 2.5-and 3.3-volt I/O options for voltage bus matching between two separate domains, and an innovative sleep mode.

The new family of dual-port products offers several mechanisms designed to enable customers to address contention issues between ports, such as busy arbitration logic, semaphore flags and interrupts. In addition, the new 9-Mbit devices are pin-compatible with the company's existing 4-Mbit asynchronous dual-port devices, enabling an easy upgrade with minimal board changes. These products target markets that require higher densities of high-performance shared memory devices, including wireless base stations, storage area networks, and network switches and routers.

"The introduction of our 9-Mbit asynchronous dual-port family is yet another proof point of our continuing commitment to solving our customers' complex design needs, and underscores our efforts to maintain our position as the industry's leading supplier of multi-port technology," said Bill Beane, strategic marketing manager for the IDT multi-port products division. "Leveraging our expertise in this area, we have developed a family of devices that offer a host of innovative features above and beyond the capabilities available in alternative devices. Performance is critical in the communications IC space, and the added functionality included in our devices will help simplify system design, and enable our customers to lower costs and reduce time to market."

These new 9-Mbit asynchronous dual-port offerings provide the industry's largest available memory size, giving designers the option to eliminate the need for multiple memories in an application, thereby lowering design complexity, board space and cost. The innovative sleep mode feature allows the products to minimize power consumption by placing the part in full standby mode without any input level restrictions. To address contention issues between ports, the busy arbitration logic determines which port has control of the specific memory location, grants control to that port, and then outputs a busy flag on the opposite port to indicate a wait signal until the location is available for access. Semaphore flags provide a hardware mechanism by which the designer can manage the use of system resources, including operations within the shared memory itself. Interrupts provide a specific mailbox location for each port, which can be used to enable software to communicate the port status to the opposite port, facilitating inter-port communication and management of the shared resource. Other features include a JTAG interface, which allows designers to improve manufacturability with enhanced board debug and production diagnostics, as well as space-saving ball grid array packaging.

Pricing and Availability

Pricing for the 9-Mbit asynchronous dual-port devices starts at $76.15 in 10,000-unit quantities. The devices are currently sampling with production quantities available in Q3CY03. In addition to the 9-Mbit devices, the new family also includes 2.5-volt asynchronous parts in 4-Mbit densities. These devices are priced at $58.55 in 10,000-unit quantities and will be available for sampling during the later half of Q2CY03 with production quantities beginning in Q3CY03. More information about these and other multi-port products can be found on the IDT Web site at idt.com.
