ZAMBIAN MINERS WIN NEW DEAL
By Augustine Phiri - Chililabombwe
The Zambian copper mining congolomerate now on the verge of privatisation, has offered its workers new salaries and conditions of service which are now being studied by the Mineworkers Union of Zambia (MUZ).

Union President, Paul Kafumbe, said in a telephone interview today that the union is still studying proposed salaries and conditions of service prior to holding further negotiations with Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines scheduled for Friday in the central Copperbelt city of Kitwe.

The new package was offered during a crisis meeting between MUZ national executive led by Kafumbe himself and the ZCCM member team to the Joint Industrial Mining Council held at the Industrial Labour Bureau in Kitwe.

The offer ends a one week ultimatum from disgruntled workers which was issued last Friday and which would have culminated in a strike.

ZCCM is due for privatisation and the process has already started with Chambishi and Luanshya already bought
