This could be another example of history shaping religion. As I have heard it, most Christians did not eat pork in the early centuries. This is not unreasonable given that neither did the Jews. But after Islam, regional wars with the Muslims as well as the Muslim retaliations for the Crusades taught the Christian farmers that while the Muslim armies killed and took most farm animals, they showed no interest in pigs. So raising pig became an economically wise precaution.
