I'm not aware of anything in the Soviet bloc that even approached the genocidal bloodbath in El Salvador and Guatemala.

'arm and fund an invasion' - you're referring to Playa Girón? ... a/k/a 'bay of pigs'? ... well the russians made their own gross violation of decency and common sense there, by sticking those missiles in, soon after .... which, in its own weird way, led to stability, through the agreement to leave Cuba in peace, for taking the missiles out .... still, bringing weapons into our personal hemisphere is not gonna endear them to us, is it

That was a fair defensive maneuver by the Soviets, in response to the U.S. missiles in Turkey.

The U.S. would certainly not tolerate any attempt by the Soviets to overthrow our government. I think Cuba's reaction to our overthrow attempts has been quite mild compared to what we would do if the Soviets schemed against us.

travel to the island, for a start ... a person to person engagement, one step at a time ... Castro can't arrest us all .

You forgot to mention the possibility of being arrested by the American government. It is illegal for Americans to visit Cuba. Our government doesn't want people seeing that Cubans are happy and prosperous.
