Won't hurt him in Middle America, IMHO. Your average gun owner doesn't own assault weapons. They're "huntin and sport shootin" folks. It'll cut with gun collectors, but your average sportsman won't give a damn, I think. The lines have to be drawn careful in the definitions, though, as to what constitutes a "semiautomatic assault weapon." There are very specialized competition-only firearms that could easily get banned under too loose a definition.
