a lot of the reason people feel "good" about work has to do with social conditioning. this is a real issue for those electing a nonstandard lifestyle. the WSJ had an interesting article recently on some downsized former playahs. obviously they suffered emotionally as well as financially. but i think there's a lot to be said for rejecting our culture of compulsive consumption and getting out of the squirrel cage of debt and workaholism. the very real human need for achievement and actualization of one's potential can be addressed in more direct ways than driving through two hours of traffic every day.
