"enormous costs to turning off the production capacity"
Rob, you claim "there would be enormous costs to turning off production capacity." So it's difficult, if not impossible to reduce chip orders to the outside fabricators? C'mon, get serious.
Regarding TD-SCDMA generating no royalties, who says so? Even Siemens admits there will be royalties.
Why does it kill off business like BREW, if chips being produced (by anyone) are BREW enabled? If they're not BREW enabled, who's going to buy them?
ASP drops, if for no other reason, because of Moore's law, but that also drops costs, not just selling price. ASP can also increase, relatively speaking, as more features are added.
Handset quality is already very good. Please explain how competition "will collapse future replacement rates." Don't you think that the features available on the handset (or lacking in the older model) have something to do with replacement? And what about CDMA chips for appliances other than handsets? Oh yes, we know about your bias for Wi-Fi, but if people are willing to pay the extra amount for a chip that does Wi-Fi, they might also be willing to pay extra for a chip for PC's and PDA's that does CDMA.
