It sounds like many of the people drawing conclusions about what is causing the epidemic are politicizing their "research". That is very sad, for it compromises the efforts of scientists, doctors and public health officials to combat the problem effectively. I saw a statistic that at least one country in Africa has experienced a 25 percent decline in average life expectancy in recent years (from 40-something to 30-something).

This at a time when the rest of the world is in the midst of a long term dramatic increase in life expectancy (in the U.S., from 40-something in 1900 to 70-something in 2000, and closing in on 80 in the next few years).

History will be far more interested in how we deal with the African health crisis than with SARS, I suspect.
