Gensym User Society Meeting Highlights Payback of Reasoning Technology; Costs Sa

Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

BURLINGTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 8, 2003--Gensym
Corporation (OTC Bulletin Board: GNSM), a leading provider of software
and services for expert operations management, today announced a
successful annual meeting of its Gensym User Society (GUS).
Presentations from the meeting are now available online at
www.gensym.com/gus. These presentations, from such companies as Dow
Chemical, Halliburton KBR, IMC Phosphates, Intel, ManTech
International, and Siemens, highlight the paybacks of solutions based
on Gensym's G2(R) reasoning technology.
This year's GUS meeting, held April 9-11 in Boston, Massachusetts,
brought together users of Gensym's software from around the world.
Regularly held since 1988, GUS meetings are organized as professional
conferences that include presentations, tutorials, demonstrations, and
panel discussions. The meetings enable users to share their
experiences in successfully deploying reasoning technology solutions
based on Gensym's G2 software. The meetings also allow users to learn
about Gensym's technology advances and to preview and give feedback on
future enhancements.
The GUS 2003 meeting theme was "Highlighting Payback - Maximizing
Business Results through Reasoning Technology." To explore this theme,
GUS 2003 featured user presentations that highlighted how G2-based
solutions are achieving paybacks, or will be achieving paybacks after
deployment. The following presentation stories are available on
Gensym's Web site:

-- Dow Chemical achieved a six-month payback for an energy
optimization solution now running in several locations;

-- Halliburton KBR is pilot-testing a health monitoring solution
for off-shore production platforms that has already
demonstrated it can prevent incidents costing millions of
dollars in lost production;

-- IMC Phosphates is boosting throughput and reducing variability
for their phosphate processing;

-- Intel is pilot-testing an online decision support solution for
delivery planning that is predicted to reduce days of
inventory by 66% with no impacts on supply chain service
levels;

-- ManTech International is helping the U.S. Department of
Defense identify what changes should be made to its logistics
operations to reduce costs and improve service levels;

-- Minnovex Technologies is increasing throughputs by over 7
percent for a major Southeast Asia mineral processor;

-- Pivetal achieved a six month payback, and millions of dollars
in savings, for a network management solution deployed at a
major British telecommunications company; and

-- Siemens is enabling Tate & Lyle, a major manufacturer of
carbohydrate products such as sugar, to react more quickly to
changes in customer demands while at the same time optimizing
inventories.

To begin the exploration of the GUS 2003 theme, the meeting opened
with a keynote address from Richard Morley, a computing and automation
industry pioneer best known as the inventor of the programmable logic
controller (PLC) and founder of Modicon (now Schneider Automation).
"Despite a difficult economic and travel environment, GUS 2003 was
very successful," said Lowell Hawkinson, chairman, president, and
C.E.O. of Gensym. "The enthusiasm of the participants and quality of
information shared was very high. This year's emphasis on exploring
the payback of solutions based on Gensym's reasoning technology should
be helpful for our entire user community. We also heard very positive
feedback about our recent G2 7.0 release and our product roadmaps."
