>>There's a 2,000 year history of animosity between the Vietnamese and the Chinese, <<

are you implying that Viet Nam has exactly the same length of civilization as China? No historical proof whatsoever.

>>Russians were far more supportive of Ho Chi Minh's government than the Chinese. <<

That is not true either. Of course, China was very poor compared to the ex-Soviet Union in 60s, so in absolute monetary term, maybe, just maybe, Soviets gave Ho more money. But China had done everything possible to support Viet Nam since 50s. Even if Dien Bien Phu victory was commanded by a blind Chinese General - Liu BoCheng by using the map for blind, which was decisive to drive French out of Vietnam. And how much trust two nations had to have to have this kind of relationship???

One of my mother's best friend married a high-ranking official (#3) in Ho Chi Minh's government and they had 2 childrens and they look more like Vietnamese than Chinese. And one of my best friend's name was given by Ho Chi Minh because her mother was a senior journalist of XinHuaShe in Viet Nam at that time and a good friend of Ho.

Yes, in history, there were some small skirmish bet. Viet Nam and China, but that had nothing to do with the current Chinese gov. And Ho knew that better than anyone else did. As for the conflict bet. Viet Nam and China in 80s, that had a lot to do with then China's policy to Cambodia communist party, but not so much to do with the relationship bet. China and Viet Nam per se. And that is why it is not that hard to heal the wound.
