I don't know. These are numbers as reported by the Fed and discussed by economists like Roach. One of his reports a few days ago pegged the combined US savings rate that includes government and private savings at a bit more than 1% (1.3% if memory serves). Private savings in the US have recovered from a couple of years back when they were hitting all time lows, close to 0%, but government turned from a surplus back then to hefty deficit now, so the total US savings are plumbing all time lows.
