When someone threatens your life, you have two choices, you can either fight back, or die. As far as I'm concerned, it's a fairly simple moral choice. A person who lives their life in fear, afraid to do anything, dies a little bit every day. Those who chose not to live that way die only once. There's a kind of victim mentality that has permeated our culture over the past 30 years, and the crime rate has increased in direct proportion to the willingness of Americans to become victims. The sole purpose of any society is to protect pregnant women and small children, everything else is icing on the cake. When able bodied persons insist on claiming protected child status, society breaks down. Freedom comes with a price tag, it isn't a gift. If you aren't willing to defend it, you lose it.
