You seem to have problems comprehending the article you posted. I know its not an intelligence problem. Instead I think your bias is clouding your judgment.

Let's compare what you just said in your post with what the article you posted said:

You said:
You had said that BEFORE this news surfaced, that THOUSANDS were recovered. Therefore, that number is completely false.
I don't know what passed for a cataloguing system in that museum, or what happened to it during the war & looting. Neither do you. All we know is that the initial estimation of 27-38 or whatever articles missing was completely false, as evidenced by the recovery of THOUSANDS of articles.

But your article clearly said:
U.S. Customs agents, working with military and museum experts at the National Museum in Baghdad, have recovered nearly 40,000 manuscripts and about 700 artifacts, government officials announced in Washington Wednesday, leaving perhaps only a few dozen key pieces missing.

You're claiming the estimate of several dozen missing items was a preliminary estimate belied by the recovery of numerous documents and artifacts. But the article said that thousands of manuscripts and hundreds of artifacts have been recovered leaving perhaps only a few dozen key pieces missing.
