I think the point is that Murdoch idenfitied a vacuum (so did Rush Limbaugh). The media was widely perceived as liberal, so those with a more moderate or even conservative bent had no place where they could feel comfortable and affirmed as they watched the news. Fox filled that vacuum. If you assume that 40% of the people in the country are more conservative than the mainstream media, even if only half of those migrated to Fox, they would have a 20% market share to themselves and leve the remaining 80% to be fought over by ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, CNN, and PBS. Not too shabby a market to start out with. Not to mention that some more liberal folks will go over to Fox just so they can have something to complain about.

It always amazes me the number of folks who love to criticize Fox -- if they watch it, why? If they don't, how do they know what it shows?
