He could be speechifying here many thousands of hours yet .... forty-four years already, how absurd - no one should ever rule more than six or eight years, this can never be healthy .... ¡Sufragio Efectivo, No Reelección! - you'll know this as the battle cry of la revolución of 1910 .... Canada has no specific rule on term limits, having a Westminster style parliament, but it is a free speech society in which natural forces are permitted to curtail long reigns of initially popular governments

What Castro says he wants, is not what he really wants, and needs - take away the embargo, the occupation of Guantánamo, the dry-foot law, and he loses all basis for presenting himself as defensor of the nation ... same will apply to his successors as well, when he does croak, which could be today or in ten years more, who knows

As long as the restriction on US travellers lasts, though, it can be useful to a degree, because those US nationals who defy it by going via Toronto or el DF are able to present themselves as independent of their own rulers, even-handed, equitable, to whatever extent they choose .... but there is a responsibility on those of many nations, i think a special one on canadians and mejicanos, through previous years of contact, and we've certainly expressed interest in a policy of engagement, generally

Well how about this - i started this post with another thought in mind, looking for a bit in the history will absolve me speech to make a point, then tripped across this aussie site whose writer appears recently disenchanted with Fidel .... an example of what happens when a major evil abates, and what was once perceived to be the lesser evil becomes the greater -

Fidel Alejandro
Castro Ruz: A
false hero

Sorry, this page has been
withdrawn.

With approximately 300 people being
held as political prisoners in Cuba and
a renewed crackdown on dissidents
occurring in March and April of 2003, it
has become impossible to continue to
justify the inclusion of Fidel Castro on
this site, even as an example of a
failed hero.
