Guantanamo became a base after McKinley launched a war in 1898 to liberate the Cubans from the brutal(according to the leading jingo news of the day) but weak tyrant Doña María Cristina, widow of Alfonso XII. The extremely emotional event of the destruction of the Maine provided the rally cry even though there is no evidence to this day that Spain blew up the Maine. The Spanish were reported to possess the new terror weapon the "Machine Gun". Deja Vu! At the end of the war the puppet regime installed by the U.S. leased the base for 99 years (for the mathmaticly challenged the 99 years ran out years ago). Mysteriously the base lease was renogiated over the objections of the Cuban government by Patty Hearst who was in jail for being a memeber of the terrorist group "Symbionese Liberation Army". (This is no joke, when Cuba said NO, the Govt decided to get a lease from the Hearst family who had a house in Guantanamo over a hundred years ago). Do you think that Junior is planning to lease bases in Iraq on the same terms? TP
