That's about as close as it gets to a public acknowledgement that those groups wish to drive the Palestinians out of the West Bank. That's precisely what I mean by extreme elements taking over.

Well, then your meaning is fairly imprecise, as most of the parties still clinging to the idea of Greater Israel (cf. Moledet) are not in the government, and the ones who are, are merely make-weights who don't make policy, all because Mitzna was such an ass and refused to come into the government.

Sharon's stated policy is that he will favor a two state solution when he has an interlocutor. He won't favor Israeli cease-fires and negotiations while Hamas operates freely and sends suicide bombers into Israel. In taking this position, he represents the center of Israeli opinion, as confirmed by all the polls and the last election. This idée fixe of yours that Sharon represents the most extreme elements in Israeli politics is beyond wrong, it's ludicrous.

On the day the PA shows that it too is a government which actually makes Palestinian policy, things will change quickly. Since this will require Arafat's death and a Palestinian civil war, I'm not holding my breath.
