By the way, one thing I did know was that pre-Flex Ascend modem cards housed 68-pin chipset sockets, and the design for Rockwell's firmware upgradeable chipset was for an 84-pin design. I know that a 84-pin chipset will not fit into a 68-pin socket. My guess is that Ascend knew that too.

Dee Jay I waited for David to respond to your post with that info., now I add my 2 cents. We did know this just like he says, I think David was the one I learned it from here on SI if it wasn't from an engineer via email. Should you choose to put in the effort SI supplies the search engine below this post and it's all there in the SI data base from way back when it was posted time and again. As David points out those extra 16 pins would cause a conflict in the installation.
