He ranks ahead of only Johnson and Nixon out of the last eight ex-presidents, and like only those two, his job approval rating has declined since he left office.

POLL ANALYSES
4/8/2002

Clinton's Retrospective Job Approval at 51%
Reagan, Carter, Ford and Kennedy are seen in more positive light now than while in office; Nixon's and Johnson's retrospective ratings are worse

Fifty-one percent of Americans now say they approve of the way Bill Clinton handled his job as president, down from his overall job-approval average while in office, and down 10 points from the 61% average of his second term. John F. Kennedy has the highest retrospective job-approval rating of any of the last eight presidents, followed by Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter. Other than Clinton, the only two recent presidents who have lower retrospective ratings now compared to their actual averages while in office are Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon.
