Paul,

I would appreciate your assessment of some thoughts I have regarding the Chips and Technologies deal. Most of the analysis from the trade journals has focused on Chips expertise in graphics chip sets for mobile computing. I'm wondering though, if there would be sufficient commonality between a chipset for a mobile computer and a chipset for a desktop with a flat panel display.

Although the flat panel market for desktops is very small now, that situation will probably change rapidly in a few years as Japanese FPD producers ramp up their 4th generation production lines with substrates large enough to make 15 to 19 inch FPD monitors at a reasonable cost. Keep in mind also that FPD monitor size specs indicate actual viewing area unlike specs for CRTs. So a 15 inch FPD is equivalent in viewing area to a 17 inch CRT. Of course Intel's motivation is always to grow the market for faster microprocessors, but it seems to me that the assumption that Chips and Tech's expertise only benefits Intel in this regard in the mobile sector may be a little off-base if there is sufficient commonality between chipsets for mobile's and desktop's with FPDs.

Thanks in advance for your assessment.
