EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- The television receiver market is the next major growth opportunity for liquid crystal display panel vendors according to Sweta Dash, director of LCD and projection research at Satnford Resources Inc.

LCD-TV unit shipments are expected to grow 20-fold from 2002 and show an 82.7 compound annual growth rate to go from 1.4 million units in 2002 to 28.8 million units in 2007. Unit sales are expected to be 3.2 million in 2003, more than double the 2002 number.

Growth is not expected to be quite so spectacular in terms of revenue, but should still beat a CAGR of 60% to arrive at an annual market value of $10.7 billion in 2007. In 2003 revenue is expected to b $1.3 billion up from $980 million in 2002.

New capacity from so-called fifth generation factories could give rise to overcapacity in the second-half of 2003, Dash said. Sixth generation factories, due to come onstream in 2004 and 2005 should allow greater efficiencies at even larger glass substrate sizes.
