France will be hit today by the first day of what union leaders threaten could be weeks of industrial action in protest against the government's economic plans.

"Black Tuesday" will see hundreds of thousands of striking workers across the public and private sectors halting trains, buses, and planes and closing schools and government offices.

The strikes will be the sternest domestic test so far for the prime minister, Jean-Pierre Raffarin, and may drain off the last of the extra support won by President Jacques Chirac during his stand-off with America over Iraq.

More than 100 demonstrations are planned in cities and towns across France, with the largest in Paris. Fewer than one in three trains is expected to run, though the Eurostar should be unaffected....

HANS EICHEL - the German finance minister facing tough times with rising unemployment and empty coffers.

Germany's economy is in such poor shape that it will breach the eurozone rules this year and will not reach the 2006 EU goal of a balanced budget, leading to fears of the collapse of the EU’s troubled Stability Pact.

In a series of interviews with the German media over the weekend, finance minister Hans Eichel said that unless there is an "economic miracle", the goals would not be possible to achieve.....
