Suppose, tomorrow, a nuclear weapon, from an unknown source, explodes in Los Angeles. And an anonymous but credible message tells us, such attacks will continue, until all U.S. soldiers are withdrawn from all Muslim nations.

And what if there aren't any "credible messages"? After all, no one openly claimed the authorship of the 9/11 attack. Osama admitted it on the tape captured in Afghanistan, but his associates and sympathizers immediately claimed that the tape was a CIA fake.

I don't believe that "understanding" the concerns of self-sacrificial religious extremists will stop them from waging war against us. Getting them under control will be a long, hard process, which will require a lot of cooperation between governments and intelligence services of many Western and Muslim countries.

Governments not willing to work with us will need to be pressured if necessary. A good example was given recently by President Bush when he told the Syrians - "I expect cooperation!" It may have worked to an extent.
