The nicest part about Lompayrac's book is the way he states the problems all viruses has to solve:

i) The first problem a human virus must solve is how to reproduce inside a human cell.

ii) The second problem a human virus must solve is how to spread from one individual to another.

iii) The third problem a human virus must solve is how to evade host defenses.

If you keep in mind just those, viral evolution makes a great deal more sense. We have a number of different answers to each question. Enough to have a combinatorial explosion of different combinations of strategies to deal with each of them.
